As fashion has become more subjective and an art form of self-expression over the last decade, streetwear has paved its way within the fashion industry, both on and off the runway. What used to be considered high fashion has been challenged, and fashion has become subjective and unique to the individual wearing the clothing. Not only has this dramatic shift redefined luxury fashion, but it has also sparked cultural conversations.
Celebrities and public figures have become huge influencers on the rise of street style. Celebrities like Bella Hadid, Jacob Elordi, and Kendall Jenner have made the street their runway with statement pieces such as oversized blazers, heavily tailored button-downs, and experiments with different silhouettes. Their effortless but striking ensembles have sent shock waves across the internet, inspiring fans to attempt to recreate their looks. What was considered a simple walk to the grocery store or pilates class streetwear has become the ultimate fashion showcasing. Everyday outings have become opportunities to express your sense of style.
As these public figures continue to rattle the fashion industry, social media has had a significant effect on streetwear’s success. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Pinterest have been successful tools and resources in starting/ maintaining trends, sharing content, and even making access to products more accessible. These platforms have made it easy for almost anyone, including celebrities, to become fashion and style influencers, gaining their audience easy access to their daily attire choices.
Luxury brands have taken note of the rise of streetwear, as we have seen several collaborations within the fashion industry. Partnerships like Tommy Hilfiger x Kith, Louis Vuitton x Supreme, and Off-White x Nike have blurred the lines between luxury and streetwear and transcended what defines traditional luxury fashion.
In the past, high fashion was only considered formal pieces from expensive brands that were only worn by those who could afford to do so. Streetwear was seen as nothing but casual attire to be overlooked. This narrative has been redefined as high-end fashion brands have begun incorporating streetwear into their lines. Despite the shift, there is an aspect that comes along with obtaining luxury pieces that remains unchanged: the hefty price tag. As more luxury streetwear pieces are being introduced to the market, affordable fashion brands like Zara, Uniqlo, and H&M have made affordable “dupes” that draw inspiration from trending streetwear pieces, allowing for accessibility and affordability.
Incorporating streetwear into high fashion has transcended traditional luxury fashion, making room for more conversations and inclusivity. While what constitutes high fashion has been debated and altered, the rise of streetwear in high fashion is undeniable. As streetwear has made its way into the fashion industry and continues to ascend, it sparks essential conversations that could continue to shape the cultural aspects and outlook on fashion. It is clear that streetwear is not just a trend; it is a revolution within the industry that has given fashion an entirely new meaning. Streetwear is here to stay; true fashion always stays in style.
